As most of you know, we have a home in Asheville, NC. When we saw the weather forecast last week, I told Gunnar to go buy some bottled water. I knew there could be a possibility of flooding because I remember what it was like in 2004 when Hurricane Frances and Ivan came through. Hindsight is 20/20, right? Why didn’t I tell him to fill up his car with gas and grab some non-perishables?
The good news: my family is safe. My parents are in Hendersonville, NC. Their memory care center lost power for 24 hours but everything is operational now.
More good news: Gunnar and Dakota are safe and the house didn’t sustain any damage. The electricity and water has been out since Friday afternoon. They have been able to get to the nearest Publix to get some more water and canned goods to last them 3-4 more days. As more resources are coming into the region, they’ll reevaluate what they’ll do next.
We are grateful for their wellbeing. Being so far away from them is hard but turning that gratefulness into action is important to me.
How can those of us so far away help? I’ve listed some resources below that not only benefit Western North Carolina but other areas affected by Hurricane Helene. I’ll continue to update it as I learn more. Thank you, friends.
